Florida Barter was founded in 1982 by Scott Whitmer, owner and CEO, as a commercial trading network of companies in the Central Florida area. Florida Barter has grown to over 1785 companies in the Orlando, Tampa Bay, and Daytona Beach areas. These companies trade amongst each other using a medium of exchange called a trade dollar. In 2011, the 1785 members of Florida Barter conducted over $17 million in trade sales and purchases using the Florida Barter trading network.
Florida Barter members list their products or services in the Florida Barter network, earn trade dollars (one trade dollar is equivalent to a U.S. dollar) when they sell, and use trade dollars to buy products and services they need in their businesses. Members are assigned a Trade Broker that provides customer service assisting with the clients' making sales and purchases. Florida Barter also provides a printed and online directory. Authorizations can be obtained via telephone, 24-hour auto-broker, or on-line.
